Mining and Crime: Evidence from Chile
28 de September, 2016
Sala de Consejo, Beauchef 851, Floor 4 - Departamento de Ingeniería Industrial, U. de Chile.
We investigate the impact of the economic shock, caused by the fluctuations in copper price, on crime level for Chile. We find that boom periods consistently reduce property crimes but have a much lower effect on violent ones. On the other hand, boost periods are associated with increases in crime. These results are driven by capital intensive mining municipalities.
