The Millennium Institute for the Study of Market Imperfections and Public Policy (MIPP) is an interdisciplinary research center bringing together leading academics and professionals committed to developing evidence-based public policies.
Our work focuses on four main areas: business productivity, innovation, labor markets and regional development. Through rigorous research and collaboration with key stakeholders, we seek to contribute to the design and implementation of policies that promote inclusive and sustainable growth.
Research Areas
Political Economy
The goal of the PE research line is to explore the incentives that citizens, politicians, and organized groups face, and how these goals may not coincide with socially preferred outcomes. The design of economic policies and the functioning of several markets require theoretical understanding and empirical analysis of the underlying preferences, institutions, and incentives affecting politicians and other social actors' behavior. Protests, political violence, and other civic participation forms have challenged the existing political structure and its institutions. Understanding the political behavior of citizens is key to understanding these emerging social phenomena, which in turn becomes critical for the design and implementation of sound and sustainable public policies. Research topics: Conflict, protests, voting behavior.
Market Design and Regulation
The objective of the MDR (Market Design and Regulation) research line is to evaluate and design institutions to maximize welfare and efficiency under incentives, technological, logistical, and transparency constraints. MDR researchers use economic theory to understand how different designs impact the incentives faced by agents. Research topics: Auction design, school choice, regulation, antitrust.
Data and Public Policy
The objective of the DPP (Data and Public Policy) research line is to contribute to the public policy debate by using rigorous empirical evidence and a data-driven approach to study various economic and public policy issues. Additionally, it aims to understand the functioning of financial markets and their impact on the economic development process. Research topics: Conflict, health, labor markets, financial regulation, pension system finance, finance and crime.
